For me, Key Club means the opportunity to expose oneself to various aspects of the community and also unite people together. It allows me to be exposed to the many aspects of the community by allowing me to volunteer in unique events. My favorite Key Club event service was the Halloween carnival at Barker Elementary in 2011. I remember going to the school right after our classes at Pacifica and standing there at the role sheet, pondering what to do. Josh, Chris, and Ryan were with me and together we worked in the haunted house and that was an extremely funny situation. Call me a sadist but I love scaring the heebie jeebies out of little children. I remember that there were two ways the haunted house operated. “Jack the Ripper” was a term to alert us that a “big kid” was going in and we could be as scary to our hearts content. “Bunny” was the term to denote that a little child was going in and we had to hold back our “scaring powers.” Josh was an alien on the piano, playing Fur Elise over and over again. I was the reaper with the fog machine standing in the corner until someone shows up. That was a fun day because I remember every scream, laughter, and cry that happened in that haunted house. The people that I have met are timeless and the bonds that I have increased with my close friends will never be disregarded. The atmosphere of being a giant monolithic group of people who aspire to better the world is entirely breathtaking. Key Club is just not a club but a sanctuary in which my mind could rest.
